“I am thankful for the opportunity to bring my 2 teenage girls on a short community service trip to Batam during the school holidays with Light and Love! Bringing them to this trip has opened their eyes and hopefully the tent of their hearts to be thankful for what they have. I am thankful everything worked out smoothly!” (Hazel Pak, Mother of Rebecca)

“I am very glad to have joined the Batam trip with the teens. The trip was a good experience for many of them to be involved in volunteering. The five training sessions from October have given them the opportunity to contribute even prior to the trip. From spending their Sunday afternoon packing clothing and gifts, planning game booths, learning how to make simple balloon sculpturing for the funfair, to the actual day, all the teens were very proactive and cooperative.

Some of them even stepped out of their comfort zone to learn the dance for the on-stage performance! Several others took the initiative to learn simple Indonesian terms to communicate with the locals. I was impressed by their willingness to give and obedience to work as a team. This has enabled all of us to create good memories for the locals and for everyone.” (Kai Yan, University Undergraduate)

Jasmine To Secondary Student
This Myanmar mission trip is the best eye-opening experience I have had. I was one of the youngest volunteers. Interacting with the local children, even with the simplest games, brought so much joy and fun to the Children’s Home. Their environment is not that satisfactory, yet they seemed so happy and cheerful. I am thankful that I could get out of my comfort zone. Throughout this trip, I learned to treasure more of the things I have.

Tin-hang Wan University Student
It was a very memorable first time in Yangon for me. I enjoyed interacting with the children over the span of two weeks. They are so lovely and full of smiles! Even though there is a language difference, I learned to express myself more with actions and the Burmese I have learnt from them. The children are very obedient and responsive; teaching them English in our interest classes was an enjoyable experience!

Ju Fang Wong (mother of Kai Yan Leung) Housewife
I am very happy that I can join this volunteer trip to Myanmar. More than just taking photos, I truly want to care for them and understand them one by one. Especially this time when I went together with my 2 daughters, I wanted to let the children experience that we can live withone another like a family too. I’m thankful that I can have such experience in this trip and I hope to visit them again soon!

Kai Yan Leung (daughter of Ju Fang Wong) University Student
This was my second time visiting the Children’s Home. My heart felt warm and pleased when the children took the initiative to share their song books and what they had learnt in the music class with the children in the neighbourhood community. Not only did they show gratitude when they received, but they also have the heart to share what they have and what they know with others.

Volunteers from other countries
Andrew Neo Assistant Professor, Malaysia
It has been a great pleasure to be able to participate in the recent trip to Yangon, Myanmar as a volunteer from Light and Love Home. I feel happy to be part of a team of volunteers who come from different parts of the world. I was satisfied when I saw the children’s smiling faces when we approached them. We were able to build a strong rapport with the children at the children home throughout my stay in Yangon for one week. My take home message from this trip is “be thankful for what I have and be ready to share what I have with those who are in need.”

Lois Lu (Medical Team) Medical doctor, Taiwan
In Yangon, I met fellow volunteers from different countries. We learned how to deal with challenges as a team. We had a wonderful time talking and playing with kids at the children’s home. We also had the chance to learn about the culture and lifestyle of the locals, as well as their basic needs. It’s a rewarding experience and I’m grateful for the opportunity to volunteer abroad.

Paola Seow (Medical Team) Nurse, Singapore
I have always believed that love can transcend all boundaries, and that language not the only form of communication. The short 6 days spent at the children’s home proved just that. What I treasure most is the genuine interaction between us and the children, and how all the volunteers put their souls into understanding them (and vice versa) despite the language barrier. Watching and knowing the amount of effort everyone put into sustaining this project moved me too.

Fiona Leung (Daughter of Ju Fang Wong) Medical Team Nurse, Singapore
I am a fresh graduate nurse and is part of the medical team in this Myanmar trip. During the medical consultations, I performed primary assessments on the children’s chief complaints at the triage station. I realize that equipping ourselves with simple medical terms in Burmese is very important, as local translators were not always available. Speaking Burmese is also a way to build rapport with the children. When the children sensed that we truly care for them, they were willing to share their personal health concerns. The culture and living conditions in Myanmar are very different from ours. I learnt to understand the meaning of health from their perspective, adjust my expectations and give appropriate advice to the locals.

Since June, we got to know a group of Pakistani refugees temporarily staying in Serdang Sri Kembangan, Malaysia. As the refugees do not have the right of residence in Malaysia, they cannot obtain formal employment and their children cannot go to public schools.

In order to provide the community with some form of assistance, volunteers from Singapore, and Ampang, Malaysia helped to set up a learning centre to provide education for these children of school age in July. They rented a place, bought furniture, and paid visits to potential students. We are glad to announce that the learning centre is now operational!

At the learning centre, our Light and Love Home T-shirt has become the children’s uniform. Classes at the centre are conducted in English and children are taught in different groups depending on their age, and through this, we hope to improve their English and build their character. We hope that through the learning centre, we can approach even more Pakistani refugees and provide learning opportunities for their children.

Here, we would also like to extend our appreciation to the Ampang Overseas Missionary Fellowship for donating their minivan. It is now more convenient for us to pick up students for classes, and others for fellowship and different activities.

My experience in Calocaan, Philippines had been a really personal and impactful one. Being there alone with no fellow volunteers from Singapore, I had some doubts about the days I will spend there. Contrary to my initial fears, I’m blessed with how friendly the locals are. They made me feel like a member of their family. This trip taught me how to open up as an individual and most importantly to treasure my relationship with those who have the same heart and same mind as me. – Amos

This trip to Caloocan, Philippines is the second longest volunteering trip I have ever taken, having been to Philippines, Myanmar and South Africa previously. To be honest, compared to all the other trips, I thought this trip was the most challenging. Life in Philippines as a volunteer was back to basics and down to fundamentals, and the physical environment was not the most comfortable. Furthermore, serving a community in a different culture for a period of time requires patience and understanding and in this trip, there were conflicts or misunderstandings arising from some innocent mistakes. Yet it is in this simplicity and through the multiple embarrassing but hilarious falls that I learn and grow stronger. Looking back, other than climbing avocado and cocoa trees and buying groceries at the wet market alone with a limited vocabulary in Tagalog, there weren’t many exhilarating or especially memorable moments; but there were many short, tiny heart-warming moments when I opened my heart and also understood the expressions of love from the beneficiaries in Philippines. These beautiful scenes interweave to form a beautiful story of love and care which surpasses national, cultural and linguistic boundaries. Amidst all these challenges and troubles, I really learned to appreciate what I have and what many take for granted, a bedroom, desk, closet, etc. I treasure the volunteers who gave up what they have to serve the local community in Philippines. It takes great courage and determination to leave one’s family and home, to serve a different people, from a different culture and, in a different nation. These “seniors” in volunteering are my great examples and motivation, guiding me in becoming wiser and happier in my volunteering journey. At the end, many people laugh at us for finding trouble for myself, viewing our decisions as errors in judgment. But I know what I want in my life – I’ve decided to play my part to build a brighter future and eternity for the many needy in this world. A volunteer said something like this when we had a chat, “Once you stepped on this path, you will never turn back.” I think what I’ve put in was all worth it, I cannot bear to stop, I will never regret. – Enoch

My recent volunteer trip to Philippines was very fulfilling. I had the chance to interact with the beneficiaries of Light and Love’s Scholarship Programme, allowing me to understand the challenges they faced before receiving the sponsorship, how the sponsorship has helped them and their family, and more importantly, let their stories motivate myself to study harder and work harder. One of the main highlights of the trip is visiting the homes of the beneficiaries. It was an eye opener- I saw for myself their living conditions, which gave me greater drive to participate and contribute to Light and Love charity events. – Chung Lok
